Importance of practice

In ancient times, students used to study by staying in Gurukul. Children were sent to Gurukul to receive education. Children used to take care of the ashram under the guidance of the Guru in Gurukul and also used to study.

Bharadraj was also sent to Gurukul like everyone else. There he started mingling with his friends in the ashram.

But he was very weak in studies. He could hardly understand anything that Guruji said. Due to this, he became a reason for ridicule among everyone.

All his friends went to the next class but he could not progress.

Eventually, Guruji also gave up and said to him, “Son Varadaraj! I have tried everything. Now it would be appropriate that you do not waste your time here. Go to your home and help your family in work.”

Bhadaraaj also thought that perhaps education is not in my destiny. And with a heavy heart, he left Gurukul for home. It was afternoon. On the way, he started feeling thirsty. Looking around, he found that some women were filling water from a well a little distance away. He went near the well.

There were marks on the stones due to the movement of the rope, so he asked the women, “How did you make these marks?”

So a woman replied, “Son, we did not make these marks. Such marks have been made on the solid stone due to the repeated movement of this soft rope while drawing water.”

Bharadraj got into thinking. He thought that when deep marks can be made on a solid stone due to the repeated movement of a soft rope, then why can't I acquire knowledge through continuous practice.

Bharadraj came back to Gurukul with a lot of enthusiasm and worked tirelessly. Guruji also happily supported him a lot. After a few years, this same retarded boy Varadaraj went on to become a great scholar of Sanskrit grammar. Who composed Laghu Siddhant Kaumudi, Madhya Siddhant Kaumudi, Sara Siddhant Kaumudi, Ghar veen Pad Manjari.
